The Bureau of Justice Assistance, in collaboration with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, supports law-enforcement agencies in establishing and expanding Crime Gun Intelligence Centers (CGICs). CGICs use interagency collection, management, and analysis of crime-gun evidence, including cartridge casings and semiautomatic handguns, through ATF's National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) and Electronic Tracing System (eTrace).
The initiative is intended to help local law enforcement use intelligence and technology to identify crime guns and their sources and prosecute perpetrators. The source lists separate application packages for Category 1, expansion of an existing CGIC, and Category 2, implementation of a new CGIC.
Who is eligible?
Applicant types: State governments; county governments; city or township governments; special district governments; federally recognized Tribal governments; Tribal organizations other than federally recognized Tribal governments; and others subject to the additional eligibility clarification.
State, local, and Tribal law-enforcement agencies, including prosecutors' offices. The eligibility text also includes towns, boroughs, parishes, villages, and other general-purpose political subdivisions of a state as other units of local government.
