Summary: Federal funding for eligible state, local, and Tribal law enforcement agencies, prosecutors’ offices, and qualifying units of local government to establish or expand Crime Gun Intelligence Centers addressing firearm-related crime.
The Bureau of Justice Assistance, in collaboration with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, supports law enforcement agencies establishing or expanding Crime Gun Intelligence Centers. CGICs collect, manage, and analyze crime-gun evidence using resources including the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) and Electronic Tracing System (eTrace).
Two competition packages are listed: Category 1, Expansion of an Existing CGIC, and Category 2, Implementation of a New CGIC. The initiative is intended to help law enforcement identify crime guns and their sources and prosecute perpetrators of firearm-related crime.
Who is eligible?
Applicant types: The structured classifications list state, county, city or township, and special district governments; federally recognized Tribal governments; Native American Tribal organizations other than federally recognized Tribal governments; and others subject to the additional eligibility text. The narrative eligibility restrictions must also be applied.
State, local, and Tribal law enforcement agencies, including prosecutors’ offices. The source also identifies towns, boroughs, parishes, villages, and other general-purpose political subdivisions of a state as eligible units of local government.
What can the funding be used for?
Establishing a new Crime Gun Intelligence Center or expanding an existing CGIC; timely collection, management, and analysis of crime-gun evidence; use of NIBIN and eTrace; use of intelligence and technology to identify crime guns and their sources; and activities supporting the effective prosecution of perpetrators.
