California Violence Intervention & Prevention Cohort 5

Summary: California state funding for evidence-based community gun-violence reduction initiatives in disproportionately impacted communities. Eligible applicants are specified cities, counties, tribal governments, and qualifying community-based organizations.
CalVIP Cohort 5 provides state funding for community gun-violence reduction initiatives in designated California communities. Supported approaches include hospital-based violence intervention, evidence-based street outreach, and focused deterrence. Projects must primarily provide violence-intervention services to people at high near-term risk of perpetrating or experiencing community gun violence.
Grant agreements run from January 1, 2026 through June 30, 2029, comprising three years of project service delivery followed by six months for the required final evaluation report and audit. Grantees may receive a one-time advance, after which funds are generally disbursed on a reimbursement basis.
Who is eligible?
Applicant types: Nonprofit; public agency; tribal government
Cities identified in the RFP as disproportionately impacted by violence; counties containing one or more such cities; tribal governments located within the identified counties; and community-based organizations serving residents of the identified cities or tribal governments.
What can the funding be used for?
Developing, supporting, expanding, or replicating evidence-based community gun-violence reduction initiatives primarily serving people at high near-term risk of perpetrating or experiencing community gun violence. Express examples include hospital-based violence-intervention programs, evidence-based street outreach programs, and focused-deterrence strategies intended to reduce homicides, shootings, and aggravated assaults.
How to apply
Applicants were required to submit proposals electronically through the BSCC Submittable Application Portal by 5:00 p.m. on August 18, 2025. A nonbinding letter of intent was optional.
Required materials
An online grant proposal was required. A letter of intent was requested but not required. Funded grantees must submit a Local Evaluation Report and an audit by the end of the grant agreement.
