Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program
Program owner: DOJ – Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA)
Summary: The primary federal formula grant for criminal justice activities, supporting law enforcement, prosecution, courts, corrections, technology, and crime prevention.
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program is the largest source of federal criminal justice funding for states and local jurisdictions. It supports nearly every aspect of the justice system, including law enforcement, courts, violent crime reduction, technology modernization, equipment, and community programs.
JAG is a recurring annual program, with allocations based on population and crime data. Both state and local jurisdictions receive awards.
Deadlines are announced each fiscal year. Agencies must consult both BJA and their State Administering Agency for local pass-through opportunities.
